    The Flow State

We know something about work and continue to learn more and develop our skills as we grow. You may have experienced, in work, music, sports, or gaming being in “The Zone”. Historically this was described as “moving without effort”. We now refer to it as The Flow State. It can be felt after the event. How much time has passed and much ??? produced, our conscience mind did not keep track or notice the passing of time. This happens most often when we are engaged in an activity that has lots of familiar time spent doing it. Think about young hanging out with their friends and how “time” just passes away. When the engagement of the activity does not require attention or thought about what you are doing, is an example of The Flow State.

Most often, this happens when enough time has been spent doing an activity and our brain patterns are well set. This is what practice is for, literally setting brain patterns with muscle memory. Eventually, you don’t have to put in as much effort or attention to achieve the same results. This feeling goes beyond our mind and into our body, this is called learning and we start at a very young age. Before we leave our mother’s womb, many can kick, suck their fingers, and toes, and respond to light and sound. The brain develops along with the body to produce functioning people that can breathe and respond to outside stimulation. The heart pumps, the diaphragm moves the lungs, our skin feels, and the eyes and ears begin to understand the world around us. Our body lives because of The Flow State, functioning without our attention.

    The Flow State

Work is producing value for others. Some of the first helpful work we learn is helping our caregiver by developing the skill of eating. You may know that this can take a very long time, even into adulthood and learning how to feed for life. Feeding your body, mind, and soul. Our eyes and ears consume everything that they are exposed to. Bringing in information to our brain, storing it, and setting brain patterns to retrieve it for later use. Our brain stores stimulation to be interpreted as information and memory. Yes, children should be protected from hearing and seeing things that will teach their brain-damaging information. Like fear, hate. self-harm, recklessness, hurting others, and what was considered “everyday parenting” by normal people. Having said that, The Flow State can be triggered into a fight or flight response very early in our development. Valuable work vs negative destruction is learned and self-control is taught. This is directing our mind into actions beyond our conscience choices and our unconscious reactions. What we see, hear and how our brain has been taught to interpret that information can often go into action before we can “think” about it. Fear of a dog or care for a dog is not complicated on the surface because brain patterns have been set in certain ways. These responses happen automatically and are learned behavior. Learning to produce value for others, to be helpful… Now go help your mother.

All this learning, choices, and responding to different information is also called growing up and we have not even got to what is commonly called “work”. Producing value on command is described as work. Practice, sorting stimulation into information, and directing our bodies with our minds allow people to help or harm each other. There are some “hurting others” that are termed as work for sports and war. Defending others with force may be necessary to learn and how to apply that force is critical.

Growing up is training our mind and body to function without attention. We engage The Flow State without choice early in life and it can be learned behavior with study and practice. The first thing is training our brain to sort stimulus into information that is helpful and aligns with our chosen goals. These goals can be anything and should be focused on with trained effort to set your brain patterns with muscle memory. If you keep the same goals or desires the brain patterns with muscle memory will become stronger. A good example is playing sports or music and practicing to the point of enjoyment. The joy comes when you are performing on command with less effort to direct your body and get better results. The Flow State can be experienced during a musical performance, sporting event, video games, and by the audience. This is why we love to watch others in The Flow State perform at high levels and we get to engage our Flow State along with them. Sports and music can be productive work as entertainment and has value. We have coaches, teachers, band leaders, and conductors that should be trained to achieve positive performance to be in The Zone for high performance.

    The Flow State

Let’s move forward to adult work and how is this connected with creating value. Work is helping others and we get paid for the value we give or sell to others. We have to make something that someone wants to give us money for. Parents give us food, shelter, and clothes. We in exchange grow up to do things for ourselves that our parents don’t have to do for us anymore. When we get a job, we do things for other people, so they don’t have to do them and they can do stuff that we cannot do yet. If we can get into The Flow State for the work we do, it can benefit many people and ourselves. These automated directed actions are natural and can be developed. The study, train to build strong brain patterns and muscle memory and feed yourself for success. Pay attention to when you have experienced The Flow State in the past and what may have triggered or allowed your mind and body to unlock your natural power. I have had a good experience with music, meditations, and some study books to help get into The Flow. The book I found most helpful to promote a good mindset and meditative practice while bringing many points of view and concepts together is The Abundance Book by John Randolph Price. I understand this was just a brief introduction to The Flow State and unlocking that real natural power for work and play. Our Mothers taught us during our growth in her womb and we continue to learn, grow and implement the basics of life.

Dr. Andrew Huberman, may have discovered the brain mechanisms that are part of The Flow State.

  • Office Chair Parts

    Office Chair Parts

Office chairs can last a very long time, not forever, and not all survive an office move. A common part that breaks is the wheel or castor that supports the whole chair. When replacing all five castors you can also upgrade them with Roller Blade Style wheels, they are taller and do not work well in partial sets. Working From Home may have your chair on a hard (not carpet) surface and there are hard surface castors that keep the chairs from slipping around. Above the base that holds the castors can be a pneumatic “gas lift”. When working it gives the chair some cushion and adjusts the height by pulling a lever. Sometimes the roller bearings on the bottom of the gas lift get knocked off or just break and a new Bearing Kit will be needed. The old-style threaded type adjusts the height by turning the seat and screwing it up or down. The other most common part that takes a beating and will need to be replaced eventually is the ARM PAD. These can be a very easy 4 screw fix or more complicated. There may be a part called an “underlay” that helps hold the soft arm pad top in place, remove that, and then you can get the arm pad screws. If you have a Herman Miller Aeron chair there is a Re-Fresh kit available. It can get that chair back to useful life supporting your body and work.

    Office Chair Parts

Herman Miller has a very long history in the ergonomic chair industry and it can be said they are The Best. Their chairs are built to last, to support your body for decades and some parts may need to be replaced. Ergon, Equa, and Aeron parts are easy to get and may be easy to replace. The Aeron introduced mesh seat and back technology and in the 1990’s we thought they would last forever. Now you can replace the Aeron mesh seat.

The next most popular brand is Steelcase and they make many styles of chairs and it can be said they are The Best overall office furniture manufacturer. Everything they make is very high quality, can last for decades, but may need some new Steelcase parts.

Not sure what you are sitting on? Take a look at this list and you might see what you have. Yes, there are How-To Videos, for repair and assembly.

  • Refurbished Chairs

This post has affiliate links and we make a small commission on any order.

    Refurbished Chairs

Why throw the old in the landfill when people can repair and refurbish products to “Like New” condition? Many used office chairs get disposed of every year and Crandall Office Furniture has been collecting, repairing, and replacing old parts with new parts since 2002. Great office chairs have already been created and improved on. Why buy a new chair, when you can buy a refurbished one “Like New” with a warranty.

We are talking about Herman Miller and Steelcase Authorized Factory Returns. Steelcase has partnered with Crandall Office Furniture to handle the chairs returned before 14 day trial period. They are Grade A, as they are nothing wrong when inspected from a 2-3 distance. Grade B allows for some scratches or dings and no structural damage. When shopping for grade A and grade B chairs allow for changing inventory quantities. Upon receiving all chairs, grade C chairs are sent to the refurbishing process when any repairs or new parts are needed.

    Refurnished Chairs

The first thing is getting old chairs. Crandall Office Furniture has long-standing agreements with environmental caring corporations to give their chairs a “landfill-free end of life” solution. The chairs are sent to the Michigan facility, for counting and sorting into grades A, B, or C. Upon a customer placing an order, the right chairs are pulled from inventory and get ready for refurbishing. The whole chair is disassembled down to the core and inspected for “Repair or Replace” parts. Since the company has been doing work for over 20 years, they have very strong relationships with suppliers and has the “know-how” to get “the doing” done right. All foam is steam cleaned to reactivate and sterilize the seats and backs. This allows for the removal of all upholstery and adhesives. All new upholstery is used and you can choose the color and pattern. Also, you have the option of adding your brand logo to it. Every moving part is tested, serviced, and repaired. Common parts that get replaced are arm pads, castors, and gas lift cylinders. Unusable items get recycled when appropriate or disposed of properly. The order is prepared for semi-trailer loads by shipping chairs fully assembled or boxed delivery with partially assembled chairs for small orders. Because Crandall Office Furniture uses this time-tested system all chairs come with a 12-year warranty. This keeps old chairs out of the landfill and prolongs their useful life and promotes America’s economy with U.S. jobs. Other furniture and components can be replaced over time. Planning ahead during the purchasing process can help extend the useful life of your office furniture.

    Refurbished Chairs

What are these chairs, that you speak of? The tried, true, and most dependable, please check for available stock. Let’s review the Steelcase offering, Series 1, Amia, Gesture, Gesture with Head Rest, Series 2 with Head Rest, V2 Leap, V2 Leap with Head Rest, Leap Plus, V2 Think, SILQ, and Amia Air. Also, from Herman Miller Aeron size A, B, and C, Atlas Suspension Head Rest for classic Aeron and Mirra 2.

  • Shelves for Stuff

This post has affiliate links and we make a small commission on any order.

    Shelves for Stuff

Today we will talk about the humble shelf, supporting our work, and waiting tirelessly for the next item. Shelves may have been developed around the same time as tables, as they are similar in function. I think of bookcaseswire shelvingdrop rivet shelvespallet racksgravity flow, and cantilever racks. People receive trucks, storing products for later use, moving parts through production and out of the dock as finished goods. Offices with bookcases, lockersstorage cubes and wall-mounted shelves are still needed. Shelving is used in many dorm rooms and homes because of its versatility and airflow. Also, many mobile options can be retrofitted to existing units to make moving items easier.

    Shelves for Stuff

Specialized shelving made with materials and construction to meet National Sanitation Foundation NSF has become a separate category. Primarily used in medicalfood service and agriculture are very cleanable or sanitized. Shelves are made for use in walk-in freezers, hot room baker racks, and wet environments like agriculture. Also, antimicrobial polymer shelves or industrial epoxy coatings are available.

Unirack Teardrop Pallet Racking is great for warehouse applications when heavy-duty support is needed for forklift use. Wire decking and security panels can be added as required. Floor-mounted uprights and corner guards will provide long years of product protection. Used pallet racking is a viable option because it is built for decades of heavy-duty use and it does not wear out. Shelving.com will also buy your surplus pallet racking.

If there is a need for long bulky materials and don’t need a shelf, cantilever racks can be a good solution. They have a very high weight rating, adjustable support arms, and easy access for a forklift. A great solution for lumber, plumbing pipe, or other wide items.

    Shelves for Stuff that moves

Most of the time we think about the size of what needs to sit on a shelf and maybe the weight. We always consider the weight when things need to be moved and we can plan ahead to make that work in our favor. I am talking about Gravity Flow when the shelves allow the items to move down the slanted shelf or surface. You can get help from Shelving .com’s Free Warehouse 101 planning guide. The full-size Pallet Tracks help move pallets without driving a forklift around the shop. When the products need to be handled in smaller units and full pallets are not needed smaller specialized shelving racks can be helpful.

Picking and pulling parts is an everyday warehouse job, empty bins can be moved and full ones can simply slide forward with slanted pick shelves or Flow Cells with rollers. Unex has end-run solutions with 1″ centered levels adjustments helpful for parts that need to be worked. There is a workstation configuration with a workbench. The Single Lane Cart is narrow to work along with a production line and the Lane Side Cart with its workbench is helpful for sub-assembly. The bolt-down or mobile options offer stability and flexibility. The overhead toolbar and workbench can be added to most units.

Yes, products need to get from the pallet racks to the Flow Cells and Span Tracks to help move heavy objects to the next stage of the process. Conveyor belt function without the need for powered equipment, install the roller pathways between the racks and shelves. Manage the movements with impact plates, guides, slowdown strips, and guard rails. Cartons can also be moved with a metal roller or wheeled freestanding conveyors. There are also curved sections available to help get the product to the right place at the right time.

The other option is for the storage units to slide on tracks for High-Density Storage, saving floor space with access to only what you need at the time. Imagine a series of bookcases pushed together and you can spread them apart creating a walkway aisle, get that needed book and then push them back together. Figuring 4′ for each walkway, you could make 16′ of floor space usable by decreasing the number of open isles.

With all those moving parts, people and production you might need some administration. A Prefab Modular Industrial Office might be the right solution for computers, managers, or an exterior guard gate. It can be designed for floor placement or above the main floor for a mezzanine application. You might need some security areas that can be created with similar material as the wire mesh shelves. Uni Mesh has gates, roofs, walls, gates, lockable doors, lockers, and more. All made with 10 gauge double crimped steel in a 1 1/2″ diamond pattern.

    Shelves for Stuff

Storage cabinets with swing doors or pull-out drawers and work bench stations really help put all those parts together with heavy-duty shop tables as well. Each individual may have a secure locker for street clothes and other items needed for work. Fun kids lockerslocker room benches, and wire mesh complete this offering.

You can always contact Shelving.com and talk with real live people for help planning your production facility. Yes, they always answer the phone during local business hours.

  • Adjustable Tables

This post has affiliate links and we make a small commission on any order.

    Adjustable Tables

My favorite entry-level adjustable table provider, Stand Steady has adjustable tables from 23″ wide up to 92″ wide. They have a full range of monitor arms and media carts to help support your equipment.

Need more style, helpful technology, and adjustable chairs? Autonomous company has commercial quality, built-in tech that helps you work better, and designer style. They publish real reviews from end-users, with purchasing counts and what company they work for. Their approach to Work From Home helps companies facilitate the logistics when they provide professional furniture for their valued employees. Autonomous has a complete offering to support people, their equipment, and other items needed for W.F.H.

The first tables may have been logs on the ground, big rocks, or ledges in caves. As people began to stand upright to work, it was (and still is) very helpful to bring your work to a comfortable height. As we continued to grow, learn and implement new skills, tables have become a very useful tool.

    Tables and Chairs

As our tools and cooking evolved, the need for tables grew and the standing height table was the most useful. The invention of chairs, in the ancient world, was not immediately used with tables. Chairs were used by the powerful to view the workers or to talk with each other. The very first chair was the ground and is still used by much of the world.

    Adjustable Tables

Artists and writers were early creators of adjustable tables and this helped position their work in a comfortable position. Consider old school architects, large, slant top desks, with an adjustable angle drawing board, flat document drawers, and pencil rails. Long rows of standing-height tables with angled drawing boards and cubby holes for rolled drawings, were what most of the modern built world used. Stools were introduced, and backs, arms, and wheels came later. Getting above your work to be able to look at the big picture was very important. Writers and accountants enjoyed standing and working on slant top tables as well. They had drawers to accommodate their equipment, and supplies and became to be known as desks.

Tables for production facilities, workshops, and food services were height adjustable with various mechanical support structures. Many metal and woodworking tables used height adjustment as a safety feature as well as comfort for the user. Tables used clamps to hold the material in place and then the powerful shaping tools safely machined the material into useful shapes and parts to assemble finished goods.

Desks for office work, managerial duties, and executive meetings were the standard for much of modern-day office work. The table was used for meetings and lunch rooms. The “table desk” was popularized by designer Florence Knoll as an elegant way to support drawings and color samples for work and meetings. When typewriters came along, the desk with drawers became even more popular and the “return” was created to form the “L”-unit desk. Tables with specialized drawers for paper files and office supplies were the backbone of the mid-century modern workplace.

    Computer Tables

With the popular use of personal computers for writing, accounting, drawing, and so many other functions our furniture had to adapt to the equipment supported. The “L”-unit desk could not support the large computer monitors and the corner unit was developed. The front edge bridged the two right-angle sides with a diagonal edge to set your keyboard with the user in front of the computer monitor that filled up the back corner.

    Adjustable Tables

With the computer monitor placed in the back corner of the desk and the keyboard along the front diagonal edge, things were lining up for long hours of sitting and keystroking. Adjustments had to be made to support the equipment, the body, and the work needed to be done. An adjustable keyboard tray was made to attach to the underside of the corner computer table and a height-adjustable base was developed to raise the monitor on the table to optimum eye level. Every part of office furniture became modular and the era of the cubicle was here. When the tables became worksurfaces that hung on fabric-covered panels with data/power cables running through them, everything was adjustable. The slotted panels supported worksurfaces and could be set at 1-inch intervals. The keyboard tray had free-floating, 4-way adjustable settings, and the chairs had multiple adjustments. Ergonomic health and workman’s compensation insurance justified almost every expense for adjustable office furniture.

Computers started to run production equipment with the invention of the Computer Numerical Controlled machines or C.N.C. machines. The material to be machined was placed on a table with rollers to make it easy to move, the CNC machines would position the material, hold it in place and then “Let the Machines Run”. These tables were not moving or adjusting and everything else was moving around them. The machined material was automatically moved to the next machine for the next stage of production until the finished product was packaged and labeled for shipping. Big, heavy, fast, and highly accurate modern production, with automated workflow through the facility and out to the shipping dock.

    Adjustable Tables

Large things become small again. Furniture needs to adjust to the equipment and work it supports. People have not changed very much over the last 1,000 years, but their work has, and in the early 2,000’s work has changed again. The use of small flat screens, wireless and mobile computers have allowed workers to set up shop, to get work done in many places. The Covid pushed many out of the office and to work from home. The office furniture stayed behind and the people still needed to get work done. Small, mobile equipment did not need large office furniture. The home needed small adjustable furniture that could be folded up and put away. One of my favorite table vendors is Stand Steady in Fairfax Virginia. They have a very broad offering of supportive tables, monitor arms carts, small storage, and fun chairs.

    Workshop Furniture

Workshop furniture still supports the equipment, tools, and your body while working. #11 post What is The Best Work Chair, we talked about Cramer Chairs and they may be the VERY BEST shop chairs and stools. Work Benches for real production, with power supply and many years of heavy use.

    AG Industry

The Monterey Bay Area and the surrounding hills and valleys are one of the best Agricultural growing areas in the country. Your workshop for growing will need some specialized and very durable furniture to support the produce of your work. BwaaaaHaHaHa… Indoor growing technology has been advancing to help manage toxic chemicals, save water and keep pests out. Our once Local 831 friend, Deborah Walliser has grown her company Got Produce? to literally, help feed the world. “She has successfully grown over 100 different edible crops in controlled environment facilities across the globe, and has been at the forefront of creating new hydroponic systems for many other crops including 6 different varieties of wine grapes, edible flowers, and extracts.” They are a great example of how “furniture” is needed to support our work.

    Workshop Furniture

Every Workshop I have ever been in has STUFF and LOTS of it. Tall swing door cabinets, shallow pull-out drawers, and strong metal shelves. If your large shop produces parts that need to be built together and you need help moving items down the line to the next stage for assembly. Gravity Flow Systems will stage your products, and parts and make them available for the next person to do the next stage of work. Parts are parts until they get assembled and powered up. Keep items organized for easy transfer and parts list picking with color-coated bins.

    Floor Cleaning

After The Work, cleaning might happen and FlexSweep is a local manufacturer of floor cleaning gear. They have created flexible a system based on pole with a life time guarantee.

In 1977 Simon Cassar had an idea of push broom pole that don’t break. Yes, the part that is continually scrubbing hard floors will eventually wear out. The real invention was the way the pole is connected to working end of the stick, after many years of effort, the TG-7 Unbreakable Connector wanted created.

    Extra Help

Not every project has the budget to support a real human helper, there are tools for that. See that workbench over there how the person is holding the part while they work to shape it? A Bench Vise will hold that part in place, keep their fingers safe and get the job done faster. Remember the power supply in the workbenches at the start of this post? Some work takes more power than batteries can provide and when you are working in a shop, you can plug power tools right in. Furniture + tools make our working lives better, safer, and more productive. Vehicles have been used for generations and RVT is a great source for many types of Recreational Vehicles.

Planning your workspace for efficiency, tools, and materials at hand. Easy movement through the space and safe buffer areas around dangerous equipment. Utility carts help bring tools and parts from one area to another. I worked with one factory that completely changed its production facility. They set it up with truck docks on one side of the building to unload materials and truck docks on the other side of the building to load finished goods ready for shipment. There are also, books to help plan or reconfigure your workshop. For some finishing touches or gift ideas (your family loves you) Etsy has many DIY products and building plans. Here is a list of Creative Tools I have used.

  • Privacy Screens

This post has affiliate links and we make a small commission on any order.

    Privacy Screens

The Privacy Screen was developed in Ancient China, possibly as far back as 771 BCE, and was thought to have 1st been used to block a draft in an indoor area. The word “ping” is used as screen, blocking, and “Feng” for the breeze, and wind; not ping pong that we know today. They were just wood panels decorated to work with the room. Eventually, around 206 BCE folding screens were developed into what we see today. Breeze Blocking became view blocking and the decorative panels became art. The use was so utilitarian, the art more beautiful, that many Chinese artists showed their work on them. The popular use of Privacy Screens spread throughout Asia and Europe.

    Privacy Screens for Royals

The use of Privacy Screens became architectural and created an image of high status. Like gold, silver, and precious stones used to adorn Royal Throne rooms and meeting halls, Europeans began to impress with their own designs and style. Still popular for everyday use, to block the view of the kitchens, and servant areas, and for ladies to dress behind.

    Privacy Screens for work

Work needs focus and direction. Privacy screens were upgraded for industrial commercial use, to protect from hot splashing metals, and burning embers and direct people away from hazardous areas. Also, in the medical field, to keep people from viewing patients and surgical procedures in military or emergency zones. Heat-resistant, medically sterilized materials were used to drape in a metal frame, with sections “ganged” together for easy set-up and storage.

These became very durable and new uses were found, like temporary fences. There is a huge demand for safely keeping the public out of construction zones or personal dwellings. The metal frame can be fortified with chain links and protected view-blocking heavy outdoor mesh. The fencing mesh can keep things out, and block wind and people looking into the area. The evolution of the privacy screen continues.

    Focus

Offices have used privacy screens for generations to get the same focused views with added sound control. In the temporary settings, wheels were used to help with setup and removal. For office space with desks that did not move, support feet or T-Bases were commonly used for simple vision and light sound control. Padding was added under a fabric covering to make the new screen panels sound absorbent. Privacy Screens became to be known as panels and became popular in the office space. The panels’ defined workspace, kept visual focus, directed traffic, and with fabric padding, sound dampening properties. The T-base feet raised the panels up off the ground and still allowed for airflow to help heat and cool the office space. They also became to be known as office partitions, not the best use of the term as we know about cubicles today.

    Privacy Screens Cubicle

The Cubicle, we hate them and miss them again. As office equipment evolved, data/power feeds needed to grow to feed the TECH BEAST. Furniture R/D engineers figured out that panels could house the power and data cables needed to feed desktop computers. They also developed the cantilever bracket, work surface, and panel-hung storage. The desk was evolving into a workstation. Panel “screens” supported worksurfaces, storage, and cables for power and data. By the 1990s the desk was almost gone, like the dinosaurs, and “the dinosaurs” loved the big, hulking, wood drawer holders- expensive $10,000+++ The thing is, that cubicles kept people-focused, visually, audibly, and at a safe social distance.

    Privacy Screens NOT

Once again, the finance dept. figured out a new way to save money and put more stress on the workers. The “Open Office Plan” to get rid of cubicles and make the main work floor into a cafeteria-style design. Rows of adjustable tables facing each other and power/data cables in the middle. Noisy, visually distracting, and lots of interruptions. In 2020, these other privacy screens became popular to “help stop the spread”, because “flatten the curve” was a total LIE.

    Furniture Cleaning

On Monterey Bay, there is lots of weather, sand, dirt, big trees, and LIFE. Our coastline is very natural, thanks to the California Coastal Commission, it is mostly commercial buildings free and available to the public. Cleaning up after visitors at our home is normal and for many cleaning up after visitors at our coast has become normal as well. Many organizations do tons of work and weigh the results. Please help others to pick up their trash and lead by example. I find it very effective to do this when there is a littering family around. “Hi, watch this” as I talk to one of the children, smile, pick up the trash they just dropped and take it to a very visible trash can or pick up cigarettes’ butts and hand them to the smoker. Passive-aggressive? Yes, I am the A-hole controlling the shit.

    Furniture Cleaning

Because we have lots of nature and people around, furniture needs some care and attention. Real anti-microbial cleaning is more important than ever and many surfaces can be sterilized with bleach or alcohol spray. Fabrics on the other hand need some information to figure out how to keep them safe. Most cushions and furniture have tags that will give you information about the materials that the upholstery is made of. W= water-based cleaning, S= solvent-based cleaning, WS= is for both and X= professional cleaning. Start with the brush attachment on a vacuum, then the corner attachment for the tight places, light pressure so you don’t damage the material, and then continue with a cloth and cleaning solution. Both methods can be used for spot cleaning or immediate spill cleanup and use a “blotting” motion instead of scrubbing. The scrubbing with immediate spills many times grinds the spill into the upholstery. Blotting with a dry cloth or paper towel draws the liquid back up the upholstery.

Water-based is easy, with warm water and a small amount of dish soap. You should not rinse out upholstery like a washcloth, because it is very hard to get all the moister out of the padding, not too much wetness. A small amount of dish soap works great, dry with a towel and the vacuum can speed up the drying process.

Solvent-based cleaning will take more care. Look for a cleaning product that will work with the material that the upholstery is made of and follow the directions. Gloves may be required and good ventilation is always important. The vacuuming will be the same.

Over time there some discoloration may develop and Bob Villa shared a technique that I had never heard of.

    1. Vacuum thoroughly
    2. Take the appropriate cleaning product for the material you are working with and make a shampoo. Use a bucket of warm water, follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and with a handheld blender “whip up” the solution into a froth until there is very little water left. SHAMPOO
    3. Fold a clean, dry, white absorbent towel into the foam and wring out all the moisture.
    4. Wipe the entire surface of the upholstery with over-lapping strokes. Make sure you only use horizontal or vertical strokes using one direction.
    5. Apply more foam to the towel as needed.
    6. Allow the foam to sit 5-10 minutes and not more than 10 minutes.
    7. Remove the foam with a clean towel that has been moistened and wrung out.
    8. Rinse and wring out the towel as needed. Let air dry with ventilation, do not use any artificial heat, and let the upholstery dry at the same rate.

Use a test area that is not very visible with all the techniques and see how the upholstery responds.

    Cleaning Outdoor Furniture

Sunbrella fabric is solution-dyed, spun acrylic, and the very best. If you have high-quality furniture you may have Sunbrella fabric and it is very cleanable, even with disinfectants and a bleach solution. It is anti-microbial and fades resistant. Other materials may be olefin or polypropylene; they are also cleanable and water-resistant. All outdoor upholstery materials will get wet and attract dirt. Mold and mildew will grow on any dirt that gets moisture on it, so furniture covers and air drying help a lot.

    Got Wood?

Think about the iconic steamer lounge chairs lined up on the desk of a cruise ship in the salty air. The deck and chair were always made of wood and mostly teak wood. Teak is very durable, sustainable, and naturally anti-microbial. For residential use teak can be left untouched and let nature take its course. Think of the look of driftwood, the natural silver finish, and calming tones. Dirt still happens and some like to let the lichen grow for that old-world patina look. You can also, prevent this from happening with sealers, finishes, and cleaners. The best company I have heard of is Golden Care, they have the best “How To” instructional video and many great products.

  • Used Furniture

This post has affiliate links and we make a small commission on any order.

    Used Furniture

Surplus, Used and As-Is furniture can get you started and help support you as things grow. Our economy runs on cycles, with highs and lows. There is always a surplus that is not being used and furniture is a long-lasting durable good, that has useful life for many years.

    For Humanity …

Most of us have had the experience of getting rid of old furniture, not being to sell it or give it away. There is a company that can help you with that and helps others as well. https://www.habitat.org/restores Habitat For Humanity does very good work to help families make a home and take care of children. Their ReStores organization takes in household goods, furniture, building supplies, and more. They, in turn, sell these items to help support their housing programs. They are a great source of used residential furniture, home goods, and surplus construction materials. Sometimes they have office furniture as well. Always call first before donating any office furniture, because they specialize in habitats for humans and not a workspace. Office furniture takes up lots of room and has low sales turnover.

    Used Furniture for work

The used office furniture market has been growing in large cities for decades and most warehouses are full. I anticipate a major glut of electric height adjustable work tables. Because of the “Work From Home” movement away from large groups of people working the offices. The “Open Plan” for office space turned out to be a major super spreader for Covid and will not be come back for a couple of generations. Check-in with your current or previous employer for surplus items and they might give them away to you. You should be to get a table chair and small drawer set for a low price for a used furniture dealer and if a group gathers together to buy 30 sets the price should be cheap. Lots of white, with bright accents and black chairs.

Used Furniture for Mid Size to Large Projects

Get your team together for the Safari, hunting down big game is a group effort. Put your packers and loaders on that text list so they can get there quick. Search for empty parking lots with full dumpsters, may have free furniture and stuff in there. Read about layoffs, Working From Home, and listen for “chatter”. Their signs are there and can be tracked. Many times “empty out before the end of the month” comes down the trail fast. If your marketing team can “pull one-off” you might have an “ON-SITE-SALE” after you purchase the inventory. You get to cherry-pick what you want, sell or give the rest away to valued employees. Make arrangements with the property manager and they might have buffer time for you before the construction starts. Keep in mind, insurance, floor covering for moving carts, and whatever else the property manager might require. Most local moving companies already know what each business park wants and how they want it.

I learned THE HARDWAY about commercial moving in Frisko Ca, Labor Unions, and elevator time. Grunts cost $250 per hour on New Year’s Eve because that was the only time the elevator was available.

If you will be using systems furniture or cubicles, you will need someone that understands the furniture to manage the installation for planning and parts. When Systems Furniture is disassembled for packing, loading, trucking, unloading, and staging before installation… Parts are GOLD, and should be inventoried or figure about 20% usage for lost or damaged parts. It is the end of 2021, I think Herman Miller Action Office 2 or AO2 cubicles have the very best and available O.E.M. parts for the cubicles.

  • Surfaces and Supports

This post has affiliate links and we make a small commission on any order.

    Surfaces and Supports

    Surfaces

Surfaces, desks, tables, or benches are what support your equipment and arms while working on it. Some people in the last 10-15 years, work with small data entry devices that don’t need large surfaces to support them. Think about a laptop computer on a cafe table or a tablet held in your hand. But, most long-term work is done with something holding up your device. There are some basics, wood, laminate, metal, poly-fiber-something, or a door. It should be flat, able to insulate you from heat-producing electronics, and be adjustable enough to help your body to be comfortable. This is also part of ergonomics, the mechanics of what your body does while doing your work. The depth of the surface will allow you to be closer or further back from your computer, think about a movie theater and how close you like to be to the screen. Power and Data cables can be routed and organized with grommet holes in the work surface.

    Supports

The next idea is what is holding up your surface. Traditionally there were tables (without drawers) and desks (with drawers) and machine stands. The bases and legs sat at a fixed height, moved on wheels, and may or may not have been attached to the top. The purpose is to support your work in the best way, to position your body and equipment. It may have been machine stands were the first to be adjustable, to position the item to be worked on correctly near the tools. Further progress keeps replacing human hands with machine supports and keeps human body parts safe. Robotics can be seen in major manufacturing all over the globe.

Set the furniture and focus on the production

Back to people and our creative work. Ultimately, the furniture you use should fade out of our conscience as we look through our equipment and into our work, what we are building. Use what you have, innovate/gather what works better later and focus on your work. Much of the technology we use today was created on folding tables, cheap little chairs, pizza delivery, and small cartons of pricy ice cream. Real products may require some heavy-duty bench work, heavy-gauge base supports, 120v electrical built-in, lights, and ESD rated for electronic work.

    Time Marches On

As time passes and bodies change… hopefully, our brains figure out how to help. The height-adjustable table has become a standard item in many tech workplaces today and many times can be purchased separately. Table bases can be used with almost any surface, screwed, double-stick foam taped, or clamped to keep them together. Drawer units can be used for supports, like a desk or post legs with a drawer set on the other end. Listen to your body and support it how you can. If you have been doing lots of computer work, you may have noticed the surface edge and how to avoid it. My personal preference is to rest my forearms on the surface to get the pressure off my wrists and elbows. Gone are the days of the box monitor on the desktop, because… flat screens RULE. Robotics has given us the ability to use mechanical arms to hold stuff, to bring the screen to “just the right spot”.
