    Update from 5-2022. Shop online through social media, affiliate content producers, or other people that create helpful information to support your work. There are lots of resources and empty office buildings full of furniture. These same principles are a good way of planning for adding furniture to help support your body and equipment.

    Can we work together?

    Space- what is the space that we will be working in? Also, you should put a list of requirements if you do not already have the building that will be used. Office space selection is very important for many reasons and needs a separate post. This is a short list of thoughts.

    Size, will the space fit, and support the number of people? In other words, will the people and equipment have enough room to get their work done efficiently? Data entry and a production line have very different square foot requirements for employees.

    Time, how long do you plan to use that building, and what changes in growth should be expected? For example, is there planned hiring for data entry, or is that new production line scheduled for next year?

    Logistics, parking, data /power, and tuck docks with warehouse storage. Commuting for employees and traffic patterns for a new location has become very important over the years.

    On-site measure, DWG, PDF, or pencil sketch on paper. Let’s get on the same page and define the walls, columns data/power entry. At Fiverr, some people will do project work and computer drawings are easy to do as a remote task.

    Design Resources

    There are also, office furniture design specialists that can put a plan together for you to send out to bid. You should pay them a per square foot amount or a flat fee. If they ask for an hourly amount, it could be very difficult to monitor.     Food and Beverage Furniture

    People like you and you love to make them feel welcome. Food and Drinks are nice at the beach and off a tailgate, but sometimes you want to take it up a notch. There is a type of furniture that is sturdy, stylish, cleanable tables, and seating, there is a large selection of furniture, called Hospitality Furniture. Your target audience is, of course the people you want to make comfortable.

    Outdoor Furniture

    Many people like to be outside to relax and providing them with comfortable and durable furniture is a great idea. Local stores have great options and American Leisure Patio in Santa Cruz has about a Million $$$ of inventory IN-STOCK.

    This type of furniture does not need to have cushions or be plush. It needs to be contoured for comfort and drainage. This is outside the building and will get rain or other types of liquids on it. Some simple square tables, benches, lounge chairs, or “site furniture” that bolts to the ground will work fine. If it is going to be left outside after working hours, it should be secured so it will still be there in the morning. Also, consider accommodating people that will smoke, with space away from the building and an ashtray to handle smoldering “butts”.

    Waiting Room Furniture

    You have checked in, spent time outside, and still need to wait?

    A very nice option is an upholstered bench with a back that is mounted to a wall. Vinyl is the “go-to” fabric, because of its durability and cleanability. It can be specified to blend in with a wide variety of décor or themed interiors.

    In a medical waiting room, commercial furniture works well. Modern furniture, called waiting room armchairs helps people get in and out of the chair and is important. The chairs can be connected or “ganged” to each other to maintain the traffic flow through the space. This provides more seating capacity than loose chairs that can be moved by guests. Medical facilities have many commercial settings blended with common furniture for families to relax in.

    Another type of seating is often used in larger areas, it known as “beam” or tandem seating. The multiple seats are attached to a support with legs at about four-seat intervals. These are used in transportation and hospital facilities. They are very durable and can last for decades.

    Tables and Chairs

    Your wait time is done and you are finally ready to be “seated”. Depending on the type of event, the furniture options can vary widely.

    Cafeterias use laminate tables and restaurant seating or long tables and benches. The durable surfaces need to be very clean and hold up to sanitation products. These areas require furniture that can be moved and stored. Folding tables and stacking chairs will reduce the storage area needed when not in use and the floors need to be cleaned.

    Many types of stack chairs use plastic or vinyl-covered seats and backs.

    The plastic stack chairs can stack higher (30+) and use less floor space for storage. They can last for many years and can be cleaned with strong products.

    The vinyl upholstered chairs can be less expensive and have varying thicknesses of padding. They do not stack as high (4+) and will take up more room when not in use.

    If you have a large area of 50 or more seats a “chair dolly” cart will be very helpful. It will secure the chairs on a rolling frame and many will hold them at an angle for higher stacking.

    Tables can also have wheels for easy movement and fold for storage. Make sure they have some way to secure the movement of the wheels while they are in use. Simple folding tables or a “flip top” hinge is great for small 4-person tables that can easily moved by hand. These folding table bases are very useful.

    Restaurant Furniture

    We have seen many types of designs, décor, and themes for making people feel special.

    Cheap and Fast Food

    Food Food has its own style, it is durable, cleanable, and simple. Tables are installed into the floor and dining chairs can be stored on the table tops for cleaning. This is commercial furniture and is not sold in traditional retail stores.

    Booth Seating

    Custom Furniture Booth Seating, which is fixed and not designed to be moved can use vinyl, leather, or any combination with fabric for upholstery. With high backs, this type of restaurant chair defines the space around a table and forms the layout of the room.

    The tables are installed into the floors, and the seating is placed around them. All sorts of materials, plastic, laminate, wood, marble, solid surfaces, and other high-quality materials are used for table tops. The bases are usually made of metal.

    The Booth concept is used from low-end though to High-End dining establishments. Curved seats with round/oval tables are very popular with fine dining.

    Many restaurants have a very special waiting area that is separate from the general dining room. It is the Beer and Alcohol Room or BAR. Smaller tables with chairs are used and a very specialized service counter has been developed. A long aprx. 41″-43″ high counter for storing, serving drinks, and is serviced by the bartender. Restaurant Bar Stools have become a standard seating solution. The target audience is adults who can consume alcohol legally.

    The classic 4-6 person dining table is very popular and used all over the world. Beautiful solid wood furniture is the most popular. Wood chairs or less expensive metal chair frames use simple seat pads and wood backs in a wide range of styles.

    Hospitality Furniture Example:

    You have been invited to a product launch for a Health Supplement Company. The car is parked and there are a few chairs, a small table, and an ashtray on a concrete dais in front of the main entrance. A couple of people are sitting and smoking a few yards away from the front landing. Walking up the exterior stairs, there are spiraled topiary on both sides of the engraved glass doors. The company’s logo design is artistically displayed on each door panel with the door frames finished in the corporate Burnt Orange color.

    You see the security card scanner and before you can press the intercom, the doors open, you are greeted by name and welcomed into the front lobby. There are some sofas and club chairs with side tables that have charging ports. The backdrop for the reception counter has an long acoustic panel with company graphics and logo. The vintage tile inspired coffee/tea service has some pastries and bagels. There are artistic pictures of the factory, fishing boats, and workers on the walls, with industry awards in a glass case.

    After a few short minutes, your contact comes out and greets you. You are led down a walkway with workstations on one side, offices on the other, an open café area, and there is a frosted glass door at the end. There is a large beautiful wood conference table with very nice chairs around it. You can see the Corporate Logo on each chair and on the matching acoustic panels to the side of the media screen. At the other end of the room is a tall swing-door storage and the rest of the wall is filled with a standing 36″ high serving counter with swing-door storage for the supportive base. You are invited to enjoy drinks and snacks.

    There are several people in the room that you know from other events and meetings and can see the itinerary on the screen up front that starts with an hour for “meet and greet”. Other executives are in the room and introduce you to the other guests. The presentation was very informative, and the whole group was invited to stay for lunch in the Company Kitchen.

    The Company Kitchen has trained cooking staff, some Do It Yourself skillets, and a sandwich station, with a cleaning crew for when you are done. Also, a very well-stocked drink service for hot, cold, canned, and bottled beverages. There are some large 8′ community tables, 4-person round tables, and casual lounge seating defined with live plant wall hedges. On one side there are 15 small adjustable tables with computer chairs. The power poles come down in five areas and the 5′ power strips have 10′ lines. Everything in that area is Apple Company-style white and very clean.

    You look at the text of the itinerary and notice that no one is leaving at the 3 pm end of the schedule. No guests, staff, or leadership have moved on to other “tasks” and everyone is still spending time together. There was a Company Kitchen crew change and many of the lunch crew are still visiting with the guests.

    When you finally do start to leave, a member of the company walks with you and makes sure you get your gift basket. On the way out the shuttle golf cart takes you to your car and waits till your car starts before they leave.

    How would that experience make you feel?

    On The Road

With the continued advancement of computing power into smaller and more stable equipment, the workspace keeps getting bigger, yes GLOBAL.

    We have talked about many items to support your body, equipment, and work style and now let’s HIT THE ROAD. Much creative work can be fueled by travel and new environments for inspiration. Lots of computer work can be done with just some power and WiFi. I work in a few, very different places close to home. There are spots along Monterey Bay with shade, Wifi, and Jackery solar panels extending my battery charge. Some coastal spots have tables with shade or I can work in the vehicle to get out of the weather. Public libraries often have WiFi that reaches parking spots and I hope they will open the bathrooms again. I have a favorite brewery with everything I need to work for hours. The sun, wind, temperature, power, and WiFi often direct my workplace. I don’t have elaborate needs, as I write on my laptop and get about 3-4 hours of battery charge. Before Covid, I would work at home or in a coffee shop and now other options have opened up. I am really enjoying the change of scenery, the ability to shut the computer down to walk in nature and get inspiration for new ideas. Many people will want to get off the grid and use a WiFi hot spot or even a satellite for an internet connection.

    On The Road Equipment

    Let’s start with Class “C”, a modified truck or van front and frame. They have a built-in camper that is one continuous “room” from the driver’s seat to the back of the vehicle. They drive like a truck or large van and normally run on gas.

    The next level is Class “B+”. You can think of this as a bus, a large metro, or a school bus that is modified to feel like a home. There are simple class “B” vehicles that don’t need an endorsed driver’s license when the vehicle weighs less than 26,000 lbs, check your State DMV requirements.

    There is a larger and heavier level Class “A”, “A” is for airbrakes and these will need a class “A” driver’s license. These are like tour buses and can run on diesel or gas and there are specific laws applicable for driving them. Class “A” Diesel Rigs may need a fuel additive DEF. There are also, Class “A” Rigs that run on normal gas.

    You may already have a trailer hitch and know how much you can pull. A Travel Trailer is what you pull with your truck, van, or car. It is very important to know what your “puller” (truck, van, or car) is rated to pull, how much the trailer weighs, and how much additional weight you will add when you put your gear in it. There are very small “teardrop” trailers that can be pulled with many cars.

    The larger 5th Wheel Trailers need a truck with a bed that is modified to accept a Kingpin to attach the trailer to the truck or “puller”. These can be large, like Semi Truck trailers, or small homes. A trailer may push you down a hill or pull you by the tail around a corner. Please take some time to get familiar with driving while towing, backing and parking.

    On The Road

    Think about how much workspace you will need, battery power, solar panels, cooking fuel, or a generator to support your work equipment. Safe storage is very important while moving, shaking and unlevel roads may cause items to fall and break. Your body needs to be fed, watered, and rested. Allow for storage, consider the total amount of weight and fuel MPG you will be burning.

    Work From Anywhere, what will support your body and equipment? Plan ahead for re-fuel stops or power up as you are parked. You might need some solar panels with power storage and Jackery company is a global leader. Founded in 2012 by a group of engineers that wanted to make electricity portable, dependable and clean. With a broad offering, they can meet your power needs, and even run your C-Pap or other medical equipment while you are OTR.     The Flow State

    We know something about work and continue to learn more and develop our skills as we grow. You may have experienced, in work, music, sports, or gaming being in “The Zone”. Historically this was described as “moving without effort”. We now refer to it as The Flow State. It can be felt after the event. How much time has passed and much ??? produced, our conscience mind did not keep track or notice the passing of time. This happens most often when we are engaged in an activity that has lots of familiar time spent doing it. Think about young hanging out with their friends and how “time” just passes away. When the engagement of the activity does not require attention or thought about what you are doing, is an example of The Flow State.

    Most often, this happens when enough time has been spent doing an activity and our brain patterns are well set. This is what practice is for, literally setting brain patterns with muscle memory. Eventually, you don’t have to put in as much effort or attention to achieve the same results. This feeling goes beyond our mind and into our body, this is called learning and we start at a very young age. Before we leave our mother’s womb, many can kick, suck their fingers, and toes, and respond to light and sound. The brain develops along with the body to produce functioning people that can breathe and respond to outside stimulation. The heart pumps, the diaphragm moves the lungs, our skin feels, and the eyes and ears begin to understand the world around us. Our body lives because of The Flow State, functioning without our attention.

    The Flow State

    Work is producing value for others. Some of the first helpful work we learn is helping our caregiver by developing the skill of eating. You may know that this can take a very long time, even into adulthood and learning how to feed for life. Feeding your body, mind, and soul. Our eyes and ears consume everything that they are exposed to. Bringing in information to our brain, storing it, and setting brain patterns to retrieve it for later use. Our brain stores stimulation to be interpreted as information and memory. Yes, children should be protected from hearing and seeing things that will teach their brain-damaging information. Like fear, hate. self-harm, recklessness, hurting others, and what was considered “everyday parenting” by normal people. Having said that, The Flow State can be triggered into a fight or flight response very early in our development. Valuable work vs negative destruction is learned and self-control is taught. This is directing our mind into actions beyond our conscience choices and our unconscious reactions. What we see, hear and how our brain has been taught to interpret that information can often go into action before we can “think” about it. Fear of a dog or care for a dog is not complicated on the surface because brain patterns have been set in certain ways. These responses happen automatically and are learned behavior. Learning to produce value for others, to be helpful… Now go help your mother.

    All this learning, choices, and responding to different information is also called growing up and we have not even got to what is commonly called “work”. Producing value on command is described as work. Practice, sorting stimulation into information, and directing our bodies with our minds allow people to help or harm each other. There are some “hurting others” that are termed as work for sports and war. Defending others with force may be necessary to learn and how to apply that force is critical.

    Growing up is training our mind and body to function without attention. We engage The Flow State without choice early in life and it can be learned behavior with study and practice. The first thing is training our brain to sort stimulus into information that is helpful and aligns with our chosen goals. These goals can be anything and should be focused on with trained effort to set your brain patterns with muscle memory. If you keep the same goals or desires the brain patterns with muscle memory will become stronger. A good example is playing sports or music and practicing to the point of enjoyment. The joy comes when you are performing on command with less effort to direct your body and get better results. The Flow State can be experienced during a musical performance, sporting event, video games, and by the audience. This is why we love to watch others in The Flow State perform at high levels and we get to engage our Flow State along with them. Sports and music can be productive work as entertainment and has value. We have coaches, teachers, band leaders, and conductors that should be trained to achieve positive performance to be in The Zone for high performance.

    The Flow State

    Let’s move forward to adult work and how is this connected with creating value. Work is helping others and we get paid for the value we give or sell to others. We have to make something that someone wants to give us money for. Parents give us food, shelter, and clothes. We in exchange grow up to do things for ourselves that our parents don’t have to do for us anymore. When we get a job, we do things for other people, so they don’t have to do them and they can do stuff that we cannot do yet. If we can get into The Flow State for the work we do, it can benefit many people and ourselves. These automated directed actions are natural and can be developed. The study, train to build strong brain patterns and muscle memory and feed yourself for success. Pay attention to when you have experienced The Flow State in the past and what may have triggered or allowed your mind and body to unlock your natural power. I have had a good experience with music, meditations, and some study books to help get into The Flow. The book I found most helpful to promote a good mindset and meditative practice while bringing many points of view and concepts together is The Abundance Book by John Randolph Price. I understand this was just a brief introduction to The Flow State and unlocking that real natural power for work and play. Our Mothers taught us during our growth in her womb and we continue to learn, grow and implement the basics of life.

    Office chairs can last a very long time, not forever, and not all survive an office move. A common part that breaks is the wheel or castor that supports the whole chair. When replacing all five castors you can also upgrade them with Roller Blade Style wheels, they are taller and do not work well in partial sets. Working From Home may have your chair on a hard (not carpet) surface and there are hard surface castors that keep the chairs from slipping around. Above the base that holds the castors can be a pneumatic “gas lift”. When working it gives the chair some cushion and adjusts the height by pulling a lever. Sometimes the roller bearings on the bottom of the gas lift get knocked off or just break and a new Bearing Kit will be needed. The old-style threaded type adjusts the height by turning the seat and screwing it up or down. The other most common part that takes a beating and will need to be replaced eventually is the ARM PAD. These can be a very easy 4 screw fix or more complicated. There may be a part called an “underlay” that helps hold the soft arm pad top in place, remove that, and then you can get the arm pad screws. If you have a Herman Miller Aeron chair there is a Re-Fresh kit available. It can get that chair back to useful life supporting your body and work.

Their chairs are built to last, to support your body for decades and some parts may need to be replaced. Ergon, Equa, and Aeron parts are easy to get and may be easy to replace. The Aeron introduced mesh seat and back technology and in the 1990’s we thought they would last forever. Now you can replace the Aeron mesh seat.

    The next most popular brand is Steelcase and they make many styles of chairs and it can be said they are The Best overall office furniture manufacturer. Everything they make is very high quality, can last for decades, but may need some new Steelcase parts.
